From the Middle East to Russia to Asia, the LGBTQ experience is fraught with persecution. Learn the scope of the problem and the challenges in seeking refuge. Resettlement is not as simple as finding pro-bono asylum lawyers. Adjusting to life in a new country can be difficult. But there are ways we can help locally to make the transition easier.
The panel features a transgender refugee from Lebanon seeking asylum in the Bay Area. She shares her story along with a woman helping LGBTQ people escape the extreme persecution of Chechnya. Other expert panelists include Kevin Steen, the founder of Rainbow Street, which provides direct assistance to people living in Middle Eastern countries as they seek refuge. The west coast director of OutRight Action International will talk about working with the United Nations and governments while implementing grassroots projects with activists around the world.
This event is hosted and organized by the San Francisco United Democratic Club.
